  • Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Fisheries Oceanography PhD Dissertation Defense Announcement "Supporting Integrated Ecosystem Assessment Under Model Structural Uncertainty" by Robert Paul Wildermuth Graduate Advisor & Dissertation Committee Chair: Dr. Gavin Fay (UMassD Fisheries Oceanography) Committee: Dr. Steven X. Cadrin (UMassD Fisheries Oceanography) Dr. Geoffrey Cowles (UMassD Fisheries Oceanography) Dr. Sarah K. Gaichas (NOAA Fisheries Northeast Fisheries Science Center, USA) Dr. Ingrid van Putten (CSIRO, Australia) Tuesday, April 27, 2021 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm (EST) via Zoom: https://umassd.zoom.us/j/95676927663?pwd=cFpXdUVKT1dMMksyUHU4SGVWZi9EQT09 Abstract: To address the holistic aims of marine ecosystem-based management (EBM), ecosystem modelers seek to reflect the diverse processes, priorities, and perspectives of social-ecological systems to describe the equally complex systems we want to manage. Because of the multiple components, relationships, and parameters at play in models of marine ecosystems, structural uncertainty, or uncertainty about which variables are represented and how processes are described in the model, can affect advice provided for EBM. Employing ecosystem or whole-of-system models in marine resource management presents a conflict between performance testing of these models and structural uncertainty. Any model used as the basis for decision-making should be proven robust to observation, process, and structural errors through tests of model performance with respect to relevant data. At the same time, test data become more and more scarce as additional processes and variables are included in these assessment models. Building from a conceptual model of the social-ecological system of Georges Bank, USA, this dissertation explored these issues by 1) applying qualitative and Bayesian network modeling tools to confront the tradeoff between whole-of-system model complexity and data availability, 2) addressing model uncertainty in whole-of-system models through a structural uncertainty framework, and 3) testing the performance of these models through a management strategy evaluation applied at the ecosystem level. Chapter 1 applied qualitative network modeling to evaluate effects of structural uncertainty on management outcomes for 12 social, economic, and conservation objectives. This analysis revealed that the resolution of component representation affects perceived tradeoffs among objectives as well as the reliability of predictions. Chapter 2 developed a Bayesian network of the Georges Bank system using expert information and fits to 58 years of time series observations. The resulting model predicted in-sample system states with 73% and 68% accuracy one and two years in advance, respectively, although some indicators were predicted more accurately than others. Chapter 3 demonstrated a framework for assessing effects of structural uncertainty on perceived management objective outcomes by comparing predictions from nine alternate Bayesian network model structures. This structural sensitivity analysis showed that tradeoffs among objectives may be affected by structural uncertainty, contingent on the performance metric(s) used to make decisions. In Chapter 4, multi-model comparison and simulation testing emulating management strategy evaluation were used to evaluate the performance of the qualitative and Bayesian network models developed in Chapters 1 and 2 in an EBM decision context. Performance testing of these models found that 1) the qualitative network model likely represents the Georges Bank system at a resolution too coarse to evaluate multiple cumulative pressures in the system and 2) the Bayesian network model formulated in Chapter 2 may mischaracterize predictions of system states important for guiding strategic EBM decisions. Nonetheless, this case study reveals modeling approaches that address model structure that may improve performance of the Georges Bank Bayesian network model. This dissertation outlines an approach to address structural uncertainty in whole-of-system models for providing EBM advice and advances the development of qualitative and Bayesian network methods as effective modeling tools in support of ecosystem-based management. ******************************************************************************** For additional information, please contact Sue Silva at s1silva@umassd.edu

  • Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Fisheries Oceanography Seminar Announcement "Ecosystem-based modeling of prey availability for larval bluefin tuna" Taylor Shropshire, PhD Division of Coastal Sciences University of Southern Mississippi Wednesday, April 28, 2021 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm via Zoom Abstract: Atlantic Bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) travel long distances to spawn in oligotrophic regions of the Gulf of Mexico which suggests these regions offer some unique benefit to offspring survival. To better understand how larval survival varies within the Gulf of Mexico,we developed a spatially-explicit, Lagrangian, individual-based model that simulates dispersal and mortality of early life stages within realistic predator and prey fields during the spawning periods from 1993-2012. The model estimates that starvation is the largest cumulative source of mortality associated with an early critical period. However, elevated predation rates on older larvae is identified as the main factor limiting survival to post-larval stages. As a result, first-feeding larvae have higher survival on the shelf where food is abundant, while older larvae have higher survival in the open ocean with fewer predators, making the shelf break an optimal spawning area. The modeling framework developed in this study provides a better understanding of factors that influence recruitment during early life stages, which could be used to inform fisheries management, particularly if mortality during these stages were to be impacted by changing physical conditions in the future. ******************************************************************************** Zoom Link: https://umassd.zoom.us/j/93401753807?pwd=MHJVMkFDV3RQUFZhQS9lNEdTNWJlUT09 Meeting ID: 934 0175 3807 Passcode: 464610 +1 646 876 9923 as a backup or Find your local number: https://umassd.zoom.us/u/ae84EIZIF ******************************************************************************** For additional information, please contact Sue Silva at s1silva@umassd.edu

  • Description: Topic: An Extensible Tool incorporating Covariate Software Reliability Models Zoom Teleconference: https://umassd.zoom.us/j/98313202852 Meeting ID: 983 1320 2852 Abstract: Covariate software reliability models characterize defect discovery as a function of test activities and related software metrics. These models also enable more detailed test activity allocation problems suitable for process improvement. However, the mathematical and algorithmic knowledge required to apply these models deters widespread adoption by software practitioners. This thesis presents the Covariate Software Failure and Reliability Assessment Tool (C-SFRAT), a free and open source application to promote the adoption of covariate software reliability models. The C-SFRAT automatically applies methods from software reliability engineering to accurately characterize the defect discovery process in terms of the test activities performed. The tool enables calculations and visualizations, including plots of the defect discovery data, covariate models fit to this data, and inferences made possible by these models as well as assessment of model goodness-of-fit. A generalized optimization procedure, referred to as the test activity allocation problem, has been implemented to guide the distribution of limited resources among specific test activities in order to maximize defect discovery for corrective action and improved reliability. The tool is extensible, allowing for the contributions of new hazard functions, goodness-of-fit measures, and optimization problems. The steps to add a new hazard function are described. Application of the C-SFRAT to two data sets from the literature indicates that, in some cases, newly incorporated hazard functions perform best. The open source nature of this tool will enable collaboration among researchers and practitioners from industry and government within a single shared platform. NOTE: All ECE Graduate Students are ENCOURAGED to join the zoom teleconference. All interested parties are invited to join. Advisor: Dr. Lance Fiondella Committee Members: Dr. Liudong Xing, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering; Dr. Gokhan Kul, Department of Computer and Information Science, UMass Dartmouth *For further information, please contact Dr. Lance Fiondella via email at lfiondella@umassd.edu.

  • Location: > See description for location
  • Cost: 0
  • Contact: University Art Gallery
  • Description: CVPA Star Series Finale Thursday, April 29, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm For the finale of the 13-week CVPA Star Series, the UMass Dartmouth CVPA presents a 3-hour program of live music and visual arts. The evening kicks off at 6:00 pm with a conversation between former Swain School student and now professional artist / art critic, Don Wilkinson, and current CVPA students Taylor Hickey (Printmaking) and Rosalia (Rosie) Amato Bauer (Integrated Visual Arts) on the Swain Studio stage. This talk will be followed by live music from the Latin Jazz group, Jesus Andujar & Grupo Sazon, a sizzling band playing a mix of Rumba, Son, Mambo, Salsa, Latin Jazz, Bachata, Cha Cha and Merengue. Bring your dancing shoes! Audiences are invited to watch the live performances safely from outside the large street-level windows, on the corner of Purchase and Union Streets in Downtown New Bedford. The Purchase Street block in front of the Campus will be closed to traffic for pedestrian safety and enjoyment. Can't make it in person? Tune in from home via live stream on facebook.com/umassdcvpa/live. In addition to our Swain Studio programming, we will have a series of arts activities and an art swap on the block of Purchase Street directly in front of the Star Store. Activities include a throw-a-thon by members of the The Clay Club (Jordan Blankenship, Danielle O'Malley and Madison Moreno), a papyrus-making demonstration by Artist in Residence Tracey Cockrell, dance performances by 3rd EyE Youth Empowerment, printmaking by Andrew Laverty, participatory art with the Art Mobile from New Bedford Art Museum/Artworks and projections onto the Union Square office building by UMass Dartmouth students. For the Art Swap, the public is encouraged to bring a piece of original artwork, small enough to carry, and choose a piece of artwork to take home. The Art Swap is open to all members of the greater New Bedford and UMass Dartmouth communities. Not an artist? Bring an original piece from your collection or simply make a donation of $10 or more and take a work home. All donations will support the Marc St. Pierre Memorial Scholarship. Marc was a beloved member of the art faculty at the Swain School of Design in New Bedford from 1979-1988 and then in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at UMass Dartmouth until he retired in 2017. His untimely death in December 2019 left a huge hole in the arts community on the South Coast, and he is still very much missed. The CVPA Star Series began the first Thursday in February and was presented each Thursday since on stage inside the Swain Studio at the CVPA Star Store Campus. The Series was co-curated and co-produced in collaboration with Don Burton Media and Beatriz & Company with support from UMass Dartmouth and the City of New Bedford's #NBfestive Winter Places project.
