Although billed as "few-shot learning" with only a small number of in-context examples required to teach a task, in practice the model requires examples to be either of exceptional quality or of a higher quantity than easily created by hand. To address this issue, we teach GPT-3 to classify whether a question is related to data science using a set of in-context examples augmented by its own generative capabilities - that is, we generate additional examples using GPT-3 itself. This study compares two classifiers: the GPT-3 Classification endpoint, and the GPT-3 Completion endpoint with optimal in-context examples chosen via genetic algorithm. We find that, while the Completion endpoint achieves upwards of 80 percent testing accuracy, using the Classification endpoint with an augmented example set yields far improved accuracy during validation. ---------------------------------------------------------- TALK 2: Generating Cancer Images to Improve Cancer Diagnosis Accuracy SPEAKER: Ben Pfeffer Abstract: The lack of publicly available medical data has been negatively impacting Artificial Intelligence in its ability to be used in the medical field. Generative Adversarial Networks, or GANs, have been used to create similar, but novel images using real images. Hence, GANs may be used to produce images that can augment a small amount of publicly available medical data in a way that leads to the improvement of Artificial Intelligence's accuracy. Here, breast cancer tissue images and their corresponding h-scores were scraped from Stanford's TMA database and converted into GLCMs, which were then read by GANs for each h-score to produce novel images of each score. Then, the new and generated data were used to train an Ordinal-Convolutional Neural Network, whose results were compared to a network that was trained without the generated data. The O-CNN whose training data consisted of the generated images as well as the base images had an increased accuracy and a decreased MSE when compared to the O-CNN whose training data consisted only of the base images. These results provide a method for improving Artificial Intelligence's ability on smaller datasets and may help provide a slight improvement when dealing with the issue of a lack of publicly available medical data. All are welcome! For more information, please contact Donghui Yan (dyan@umassd.edu).

  • Description: Topic: Honeybee Hive Health Monitoring via Integrated Environmental Sensors Location: Science & Engineering Building (SENG), Room 212 Zoom Conference Link: https://umassd.zoom.us/j/94389434410 Meeting ID: 943 8943 4410 Passcode: 693805 Abstract: Honeybees are dying at an alarming rate for reasons not yet fully understood, which poses a threat to our ecosystem and food supply. Better hive health monitoring systems are vital for beekeepers to gain early awareness of potential issues with the health of their hives, so that preventative actions can be taken earlier. Following a survey of current literature on optimal methods for automatically assessing honeybee hive health, an electronic monitoring system was designed, built, and installed in a live honeybee hive to gather sensor data. The monitoring system features high-fidelity environmental sensing of audio and temperature, runs on solar power, and locally stores sensor data, then wirelessly transmits it to an internet-connected base station. Remote monitoring in real-time is enabled by securely connecting to the base station over the internet. The monitoring system's sensor frames were designed to easily retrofit an existing Langstroth hive with minimally invasive environmental sensors. Custom-designed printed circuit boards were used throughout the monitoring system and sensor frames to collect and transmit data. To visualize how bees are distributed throughout the hive interior over time, an interactive three-dimensional heat map web-application was created, which uses gathered temperature data. By applying methods from the literature, temperature readings and audio recordings from the monitoring system were analyzed for specific characteristics, such as temperature trends indicative of declining hive health, or increased audio amplitude within a specific frequency range over a particular period to predict a potential swarming event. • Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Fisheries Oceanography Seminar Announcement "Research Advances in New York's White Shark Nursery Area" Dr. Tobey Curtis NOAA Fisheries Scientist and Fishery Management Specialist Atlantic Highly Migratory Species Management Division Glouster, MA Wednesday, April 27, 2022 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm SMAST East, Rooms 101/102 Also Via Zoom BIO: Tobey Curtis (PhD, SMAST Class of 2018) is a NOAA Fisheries scientist and fishery management specialist in the Atlantic Highly Migratory Species Management Division based in Gloucester, MA. Tobey has been studying the ecology and fisheries biology of sharks, skates, and rays for over 22 years, with a focus on using electronic tagging and spatial analyses to improve fisheries management. ABSTRACT Research on white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) has been rapidly advancing in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean over the last decade; however, most data has been collected on larger subadult and adult individuals. Since 2015, Dr. Curtis and a collaborative group of researchers have been tagging and sampling young-of-the-year (YOY) white sharks (119-160 cm fork length) in their only known nursery area off Long Island, New York. Using a combination of technologies, including acoustic, archival, and satellite tagging, the research has revealed new insights into the three-dimensional movements, habitat use, and exposure to anthropogenic threats of this vulnerable life stage. This seminar will provide an overview of research progress on these YOY white sharks, and the importance of the New York nursery area to the sustainability of the Northwest Atlantic white shark population. Additionally, Dr. Curtis will describe how electronic tagging technologies can be integrated to address important conservation and management needs, as well as the tremendous value of collaborating with friends and fishermen in the local community. ******************************************************************************** Zoom Link https://umassd.zoom.us/j/93758230260?pwd=OHJ5UDloQkZZaCtXcTlBNlR6Qm0rQT09 Meeting ID: 937 5823 0260 Passcode: 426839 One tap mobile +13017158592,,93758230260#,,,,*426839# US (Washington DC) +13126266799,,93758230260#,,,,*426839# US (Chicago) Dial by your location +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 646 876 9923 US (New York) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) Find your local number: https://umassd.zoom.us/u/acosTPRs4V ******************************************************************************** For additional information, please contact Sue Silva at s1silva@umassd.edu

  • Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Fisheries Oceanography PhD Proposal Defense Announcement "Application of optical and acoustic technologies to improve the understanding of fish behavior, ecology, and stock assessments" By Christopher Rillahan Advisor Pingguo He, School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Committee Members Dr. Steven Cadrin, SMAST, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Dr. Kevin Stokesbury, SMAST, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Dr. Theodore Castro-Santos, U.S. Geological Survey, S.O. Conte Anadromous Fish Research Laboratory Dr. Kresimir Williams, National Marine Fisheries Service, Alaska Fisheries Science Center Friday, April 29, 2022 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm SMAST East, Rooms 102/103 836 S. Rodney French Blvd, New Bedford, MA Abstract: The development of underwater optical and acoustic technology has evolved rapidly throughout the 20th century. However due to a lack of data, scientific surveys and stock assessment models have traditionally relied on simplified assumptions of fish behavior. While there is a general understanding that fish have well developed sensory systems, mobile capacity and complex life histories, the lack of information often precludes its use in assumptions of gear catchability, survey design, and spatial and temporal population dynamics. The advancement and incorporation of observational technology allows fisheries researchers to improve our understanding of fish behavior. The results can be seen in the development of enhanced fishing technology, improved assumptions of survey gear catchability and novel survey methodologies. This dissertation focuses on the application of novel technologies to improve our understanding of fish behavior and ecology, with the goal of improving monitoring and management. The dissertation includes the development of survey technology to study the distribution of structure-oriented black sea bass in southern Massachusetts using stereoscopic underwater video systems. This research is in response to concerns that the current regional survey methodologies do not adequately sample all fish populations. Similarly, several recent studies indicate that our understanding of river herring migration may be biased by existing sampling techniques. A high-resolution acoustic imaging was thus used to study the migratory behavior of anadromous river herring during their spring spawning run to provide insight into river herring migratory behavior and the effect of environmental variables on movement. The behavioral data will then be used to investigate the bias and precision of current sampling methodologies, thereby improving the estimates of run size in river herring. Finally, the use of high-resolution acoustics to study the impacts anthropogenic structures on migratory fish movement will also be reported and included in the dissertation. ******************************************************************************** Join Zoom Meeting https://umassd.zoom.us/j/95655023555?pwd=VVBUaWNLYWFyS1Jyem5kU2xYQ0t0UT09 Meeting ID: 956 5502 3555 Passcode: 885480 One tap mobile +13126266799,,95655023555#,,,,*885480# US (Chicago) +16468769923,,95655023555#,,,,*885480# US (New York) Dial by your location +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 646 876 9923 US (New York) +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) Meeting ID: 956 5502 3555 Passcode: 885480 Find your local number: https://umassd.zoom.us/u/aumvpnBW Join by SIP 95655023555@zoomcrc.com Join by H.323 162.255.37.11 (US West) 162.255.36.11 (US East) 115.114.131.7 (India Mumbai) 115.114.115.7 (India Hyderabad) 213.19.144.110 (Amsterdam Netherlands) 213.244.140.110 (Germany) 103.122.166.55 (Australia Sydney) 103.122.167.55 (Australia Melbourne) 149.137.40.110 (Singapore) 64.211.144.160 (Brazil) 149.137.68.253 (Mexico) 69.174.57.160 (Canada Toronto) 65.39.152.160 (Canada Vancouver) 207.226.132.110 (Japan Tokyo) 149.137.24.110 (Japan Osaka) Meeting ID: 956 5502 3555 Passcode: 885480 ******************************************************************************** For additional information, please contact Sue Silva at s1silva@umassd.edu

Flexible spending is the only benefit you need to re-enroll in every year during open enrollment if you would like to continue to have this benefit. You do not need to do anything with your health insurance benefit if you would like to continue with the same plan.
