AMANDA MEANS: LIGHT YEARS
- Location: > See description for location

- Description: University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is delighted to host a career survey of the work of renowned U.S. artist Amanda Means at the University Art Gallery in Star Store Campus, Downtown New Bedford.
For over forty years, Amanda Means has created a body of work that has pushed the boundaries of the photographic medium with her celebrated Leaf, Flower, Water Glass, and Light Bulb series of images. Means has been a darkroom innovator throughout her career: adapting a 19th century camera for use as an enlarger, photographing objects without the use of negatives, working with a large-format Polaroid camera, and creating a series of remarkable abstracts working only with light and photographic materials. The artist's darkroom alchemy was cited by the Guggenheim Foundation in awarding Means their prestigious Fellowship in 2017 for her contribution to contemporary photography.
Our survey exhibition, Means' first retrospective, includes examples of work from all phases of her career. Alongside key pieces from her color Polaroid Light Bulb and silver gelatin Water Glass works, we are excited to be showing some of the artist's early prints and works on paper, as well as important examples of her black and white Flower and Light Bulb works. This affords a unique opportunity to view Means' most celebrated images in the broader context of her overall practice.
Amanda Means is a graduate of Cornell University and SUNY Buffalo, and is a 2017 Guggenheim Fellow, awarded for her contribution to contemporary photography. She has exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad, and her work is included in numerous collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston; the MIT List Visual Arts Center; the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, N.Y.; and the Nicola Erni Collection, Switzerland. The artist is represented by JHB Gallery, New York, and lives and works in Beacon, New York.

Abstract:
The Commercial Fisheries Research Foundation was founded in 2004 by a group of fishermen and others in the industry to establish an alternative process for supporting fisheries research that would be led by members of the commercial fishing industry. Initially the Research Foundation’s work focused on supporting collaborative conservation gear engineering projects in the groundfish fishery. The aim was for fishermen and scientists to work together to develop new gear or modify existing gear to allow fishermen to fish more selectively for species in abundance while protecting those stocks in need of rebuilding. Since that time, the Research Foundation’s work has expanded to include research pertinent to all fishing sectors and all areas of importance to the commercial fishing industry based in the southern New England region. This presentation will focus on sharing the current work the Research Foundation is conducting. A brief overview of the Research Foundation's history will also be provided.

"Micro-siting and Nitrogen Removal Efficiency of a Liquid Injection Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB)"

Abstract
As development of coastal areas has increased, nutrient loads and particularly nitrogen (NO3-, NO2-, and NH4) have also increased significantly. In addition to the known health impacts that nitrogen (as nitrate) can have on people through drinking water, receiving coastal waters are severely impacted. Southeastern Massachusetts estuaries have been experiencing negative impacts from watershed nitrogen inputs resulting in nitrogen enrichment, eutrophication, and declines in ecosystem health. As a result of the wide-spread occurrence of estuarine nitrogen enrichment, variety of techniques are being explored by towns throughout southeastern Massachusetts to mitigate nitrogen inputs from watersheds to their estuaries. One of the techniques that has seen increased interest due to its moderate cost, ease of installation, and low impact to the environment is the liquid injection PRB. This research investigates the utility of using liquid injection PRBs for restoration of estuarine water quality.
For PRB technology to be an effective mitigation method it must be specifically installed to meet local site conditions. Micro-siting techniques were implemented in the installation and design of a the PRB to maximize reduction of nitrogen per unit cost. After the PRB was correctly sited the amount of nitrogen reduction that can be achieved in groundwater from residential areas was established. To better understand the biogeochemistry associated with PRBs and to optimize future PRB installations the extent to which the liquid injectate forming the PRB, emulsified vegetable oil (EVO), travels with groundwater and spreads from point of injection was investigated. Additionally, secondary reactions that occur in reducing conditions were monitored to evaluate their impact to the groundwater and receiving water bodies.

AMANDA MEANS: LIGHT YEARS
- Location: > See description for location
- Contact: > See Description for contact information

Title: Endotherms and thermal performance: What thermoregulatory phenotypes can tell us about mammals and climate
Abstract: Research in my lab combines comparative physiology, ecology and evolutionary biology. We seek to understand how rigidity or flexibility in metabolism and body temperature regulation affects the energetics of a species, and how their evolutionary history has shaped these patterns. Despite a large body of knowledge on the thermoregulation of temperate and cold-climate endotherms, our functional knowledge of endotherms in warmer climates remains incredibly scarce. In particular, their use of facultative heterothermy, lowering or raising body temperatures to conserve energy and/or water, has been chronically understudied. Small endotherms (< 5 kg) are often assumed to live predominantly at temperatures below thermoneutrality. Tropical and subtropical mammals, however, routinely experience temperatures above the lower critical limit of the thermoneutral zone. Therefore, unlike temperate species that must consistently generate heat to maintain an elevated body temperature, low latitude species spend more time at thermoneutrality and therefore can spend the energy elsewhere. As well as providing a general overview of some of the forms of heterothermy observed in warm climates, I will discuss the costs and benefits of the body temperature variability in warm climates, the evolution of homeothermy in mammals and the links (or lack thereof) between basal metabolic rates and life histories in mammals
