  • Description: Topic: A Comparison of Two Methods for Acoustic Rainfall Estimation in Buzzards Bay Location: Science & Engineering Building (SENG), Room 222 Zoom Conference Link: https://umassd.zoom.us/j/91683011749 Meeting ID: 916 8301 1749 Passcode: 646870 Abstract: Ma and Nystuen (2005) successfully detected and estimated rainfall at sea from passive underwater acoustics. They detected rain from three narrowband frequencies (5.4, 8.3, and 21 kHz), and then estimated log rainfall rate via a regression with energy in the 5 kHz band. Mallary et al. (2022) improved rainfall detection by exploiting broadband spectra while reducing the dimensionality through principal component analysis (PCA). This project moves beyond detection to estimate the rainfall using the PCA-reduced acoustic power spectra. This defense compares two estimation methods: regression and quantization. Both estimation techniques start with the binary detection of rainfall using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) decision boundary (Boser et al., 1992). After binary detection, the regression estimates the rain rate on the rain detections using a Linear Minimum Mean Square Error regression trained on the ground truth rain rate against the PCA-reduced PSDs. The quantizer optimizes 5 rainfall quantization levels using Lloyds Algorithm (1982), then trains a multiclass classifier on the acoustic PSDs exploiting Dietterich and Bakiri's error-correcting output codes (1995) with multiple binary SVM classifiers. The quantizer uses this multiclass classifier to group the binary rain detections into one of 5 rain rate ranges and then estimates the rain rate by quantizing each range, or class, to the levels defined by Lloyds algorithm. These methods are compared using 43 days of acoustic and meteorological data collected on a mooring in Buzzards Bay, MA. Advisor(s): Dr. John R. • Description: Topic: Exploration of Motion Compensation Techniques in ISAR Imaging Location: Science & Engineering Building (SENG), Room 212 Zoom Conference Link: https://umassd.zoom.us/j/99590335691 Meeting ID: 995 9033 5691 Passcode: 069225 Abstract: Current inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) testing techniques for large targets has a need for significantly big spaces. More specifically the testing is done in anechoic chambers. This necessitates a significant cost along with a sizeable testing environment. One way to overcome this issue is to scale everything proportionally. This entails scaling the size of the target at use down and using proportionally higher electromagnetic (Emag) frequencies, since Maxwell’s equations are invariant under dilation transformation. Proof of concept for a scaled down ISAR system has been recently achieved. This allows for an exploration in signal processing techniques which can yield enhanced cross-range resolution ISAR images. • Description: Topic: Application of Reliability and Resilience Models to Machine Learning Location: Science & Engineering Building (SENG), Room 212 Zoom Link: https://umassd.zoom.us/j/91653003465 Meeting ID: 916 5300 3465 Passcode: 920989 Abstract: Machine Learning (ML) systems such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are susceptible to adversarial scenarios. In these scenarios, an attacker attempts to manipulate or deceive a machine learning model by providing malicious input resulting in incorrect predictions or decisions, which can have severe consequences in security, healthcare, and finance applications. Failures in the ML algorithm can lead to failures in the application domain and the system to which they provide functionality, which may possess performance requirements, hence the need for software reliability and resilience assessment. Many studies propose enhanced techniques to improve the robustness and resilience of ML algorithms. Yet very few provide quantitative methods that promote risk assessment or measure progress toward improvements in such systems. This research demonstrates the applicability of software reliability and resilience tools to ML algorithms providing an objective approach to assess reliability and resilience recovery after a degradation from known adversarial attacks. An image classification model using CNNs has been created as the target of two generative adversarial attacks (i) the Fast Gradient Sign Method and (ii) the Projected Gradient Descent. The classifier and adversarial attacks were utilized in a min-max game scenario to replicate incremental learning and adaptive adversarial training, to minimize/maximize the number of failures of the classification algorithm. Model-generated data was collected and prepared in a format suitable for software reliability growth models (SRGM) with and without covariates and resilience models, including failure counts, memory usage, and the intensity of noise added by the attacks. Our results suggest that tools incorporating SRGMs, and resilience techniques are suitable for quantifying and predicting the resilience and reliability of ML models and may find practical use in many domains in which these models are applied.
