The standard approach is to parameterize the turbulence expressed by an extra diffusion. Physics-based models are highly diffusive and do not capture the backscattering of the energy cascade to larger scales. More recent approaches have tried to use machine learning methods to solve this problem, but they are usually not generalizable. This work is a first step in investigating whether turbulence closures should be stochastic instead of deterministic. 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM	Department of Fisheries Oceanography Weekly Seminar Announcement - Lu Wang Location: > See description for location Contact: > See Description for contact information Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Fisheries Oceanography Weekly Seminar Announcement "Modeling study of ocean acidification in the US northeast coastal region" By Lu Wang PhD Candidate Department of Fisheries Oceanography Wednesday, September 14, 2022 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm SMAST East, Rooms 101/102 and via Zoom Abstract: The ocean acidification (OA) condition in the US northeast coastal region changes over multi-time scales, with upwelling caused by Warm Core Rings (WCRs) and Warm Core Eddies (WCEs), the coastal river discharge, and a long-term variability due to climate change-induced interannual-decadal fluctuation of atmospheric CO2 loading and the global warming. However, the contribution of these factors to OA requires comprehensive regional studies in the US northeast coastal region. The variability is manifested through the fully nonlinear interaction of physical, biological, and chemical processes. The Northeast Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Model (NeBEM) was developed and validated for the year 2017 and 2018 to estimate the contributions of WCRs and WCEs to the nitrogen and carbon flux over the US northeast shelf region. During January to April, the results showed that the fluxes were 29%, 26%, and 33% higher over the WCRs and WCEs periods in Scotia Shelf, Northeast Chanel, and Mid-Atlantic Bight, respectively. The WCRs and WCEs intrusion significantly reduced the offshore nutrient flux over the Georges Bank. Sensitivity studies were conducted to quantify the contribution of increased atmospheric CO2, sea surface temperature (SST), and river discharges. By the year of 2050, the vertically averaged aragonite saturation state ( ) will decrease 1-11% in the condition of atmospheric CO2 increased at a rate of 2.18ppm/y. The increased SST (2.24 °C) will intensify the circulation of Georges Bank. Furthermore, the vertically averaged will increase 3-13% under this condition. Join us as we visit Fenway Park to see the Boston Red Sox take on the Kansas City Royals on Saturday, Sept. 17. And if baseball is not your thing, you can still get a seat on the bus to enjoy beautiful Boston without the hassle of finding somewhere to park! Red Sox tickets are only $25 and includes a seat on the bus. If you just want to go into Boston it is only $10. The event is open to UMass Dartmouth students only, and students can only purchase one ticket per name/email. Space is limited to 48 people for the Red Sox game and 48 people for a day in Boston. Tickets are non-refundable but are transferable. The bus will leave from Parking Lot 4 at 12pm and drop off at Fenway Park. The game is at 4:10pm (gates open at 2:45pm) and the buses will pick up from Fenway at 10pm. Tickets for the game will be emailed to students closer to date of event. Everyone attending will also need to complete an Assumption of Risk and Release form, found on the MyOrgs website under Campus Links.
