  • Description: Topic: 5G Based V2V Communication for Autonomous Vehicles Location: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (SENG), Room 213A ZOOM Teleconference: https://umassd.zoom.us/j/93576722699 Abstract: The advances in distributed intervehicle communication networks have stimulated a fruitful line of research in cooperative Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs). When grouped into platoons, the individual CAVs must automatically adjust their speeds using the feedback of on-board sensors and communication with the neighboring vehicles to maintain strong stability. The gap between the communication network and vehicular traffic research are one of the most significant hurdles towards the realization of this CAV technology. This research in the dissertation is to develop a Joint Network-Traffic approach to improve the safety and stability of CAVs by optimizing the information flow. Our studies on 3rd Generation Partnership Project releases and simulation of 5G New Radio(NR) framework show that the channel loss at this high frequency is reduced by using flexible numerology, advanced physical layer techniques and orthogonal resources in 5G NR. In addition, our studies show that the channel quality is sensitive to the mobility of neighboring vehicles and road topology. To improve the platoon stability, we proposed a new approach that considers vehicle dynamics including non-linear acceleration into the mmWave communication system design for improving both the channel capacity and safety for CAVs. Both the simulations and experiments using the hardware demonstrate that the proposed approaches can improve beamforming and channel performance in vehicular mobility environments. Specifically, the proposed adaptive platooning scheme overcomes the routing assumption by merging vehicles for different sources and destinations through mobile communication. Further, we investigated a sidelink based network model for resource sharing which is suitable for close-range platooning applications. The outcome of the research in this dissertation can potentially foster many cooperative CAV applications by allowing communications among vehicles. • Description: Topic: Covariate Software Defect Detection Models to Explicitly Characterize Changepoints Location: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (SENG), Room 213A ZOOM Teleconference: https://umassd.zoom.us/j/92427947982 Meeting ID: 924 2794 7982 Passcode: 399192 Abstract: Large-scale software exhibits periods of increased defect discovery when blocks of less thoroughly tested code are introduced into an existing codebase. For example, the mission systems schedule of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter includes multiple overlapping software blocks associated with various capabilities. Software reliability researchers have proposed changepoint models to characterize periods of increased defect discovery, where attempts to identify the location of these changepoints after testing have been performed. This is counterintuitive as conscious decisions drive software changepoints and the models are difficult to employ in a predictive manner. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes a covariate software defect detection model capable of explaining changepoints in terms of common software testing activities and metrics such as software size estimation, code coverage, and defect density. The proposed and past models are compared with respect to their predictive accuracy and computational efficiency. Our results indicate that the proposed approach enables accurate prediction of the time required to achieve a desired defect discovery intensity or mean time to failure despite the practical challenges posed by changepoints in software. • Description: Topic: Covariate Software Vulnerability Discovery Model to Support Cybersecurity Test & Evaluation Location: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (SENG), Room 213A ZOOM Teleconference: https://umassd.zoom.us/j/99866093498 Meeting ID: 998 6609 3498 Passcode: 470229 Abstract: Without quantitative methods to assess the vulnerability discovery process in software systems acquired by government organizations, national defense, security, and critical infrastructure will be subject to unnecessary risk of degradation or being disabled. Rigorous test and evaluation procedures can enable quantitative assessment of cybersecurity measures and be incorporated into government contracts to ensure taxpayer dollars produce quality software that exhibits a high degree of protection against various forms of cyberattacks. This thesis presents a study which shows how explicit quantification of the underlying software testing activities that lead to vulnerability discovery enables more detailed modeling and prediction, thus showing significant improvement in their ability to support cybersecurity test and evaluation in comparison to previous models. An open-source software system is identified and subjected to various forms of penetration testing activities through the utilization of both automated and manual multi-function tools and techniques. The methodology for selecting an appropriate software vulnerability taxonomy as well as the correct combination of tools and techniques for a particular system are discussed. A dataset was created by collecting the amount of effort dedicated to each of these penetration testing activities as well as the appropriate categorization of the vulnerabilities discovered based on security risks. This data served as input into existing models to demonstrate how detailed data collection during testing can support evaluation through quantitative models to assess the discovery of vulnerabilities that may lead to cyberattack in software. The Alhazmi-Malaiya Logistic (AML) model, which often provided the best fit in past research, is a nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) software reliability model without covariates. This is compared with the Discrete Cox Proportional Hazards covariate model using several alternative hazard functions considering data on three covariates. Each model's goodness of fit in respect to the collected dataset and the prediction accuracy of each are analyzed. Effort allocation based on these models can provide general guidance on the amount of effort to invest and information regarding the effectiveness of specific testing activities. Our results indicate that the vulnerability discovery model incorporating covariates drastically outperformed the AML model. Thus, vulnerability discovery models incorporating covariates can provide more detailed and accurate assessment of software security based on multiple testing activities. • Description: Mechanical Engineering (MNE) SEMINAR DATE: Friday, April 22, 2022 TIME: 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. LOCATION: Charlton College of Business (CCB), Room 115 ------------------------------------------------------------ SPEAKER #1: Geoffrey McNally, MS student in Mechanical Engineering (advisor: Geoffrey Cowles and Gary Kim) TOPIC: A Comparison of Viscous Models for Computational Fluid Mechanics ABSTRACT: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is an extremely powerful tool for assessing complex systems or those that aren't well documented, however it is far from being able to process complex systems in real time. Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport's Underwater Vehicle Launch Dynamics Simulation (UVLDS) code is considered the Navy's gold standard for real time launch trajectory analysis of devices. To aid in better tuning input files for the UVLDS, transient CFD simulations are being performed to improve the understanding of the forces and moments that arise in certain fringe cases. As part of this investigation, extensive research has been performed on the viscous solvers used by ANSYS Fluent. This presentation focuses on the k-ϵ and k-ω 2 equation viscous models, their advantages, disadvantages, and some of the common corrections used for them. ------------------------------------------------------------ SPEAKER #2: Ross Jacques, MS student in Mechanical Engineering (advisor: Banafsheh Seyedaghazadeh) TOPIC: Energy Harvesting of Flow-Induced Vibrations Using Sliding-Mode Triboelectric Nanogenerators ABSTRACT: Energy harvesting of mechanical systems has taken many forms such as piezoelectric, electrostatic, and electromagnetic transduction. Introduced in 2012, Triboelectric Nanogenerators have begun to be integrated into fabrics, jewelry, and microsensors. Typical Triboelectric Nanogenerators rely on contact electrification on which certain materials are electrically charged once they separate from each other or come into contact with a different material. While studies of Triboelectric materials have been thorough, its integration onto specific applications has been lacking. One such application is to use Sliding-Mode Triboelectric Nanogenerator (S-TENG) to harvest electrical energy from fluid flow. S-TENGs could be integrated into already existing wave energy converters to harness the wasted mechanical energy brought forth by the fluid energy. These flow-induced vibrations are quite abundant sources of energy in nature and are quite underused, so integrating S-TENGs into existing applications could help to harness this wasted energy source. Flow-induced vibrations are low frequency, high amplitude oscillations which are brought forth from an object being immersed in a flowing fluid. By capturing the energy of flow-induced vibrations, the fluid energy can be converted to mechanical energy followed by electrical energy. In this current project, our goal is to find the optimum set of S-TENG design parameters to produce the highest power output with the best efficiency. This will be achieved by understanding the role of system parameters plays in the power generation mechanism, such as the resistance in the electrical circuit, the contact area of the two TENG plates, relative displacement of the TENG plates due to increased flow velocity, flow velocity, and the contact pressure between the two TENG plates. In addition, we are interested to better understand how the power produced is scalable in such S-TENGs so that if used for larger applications, we can characterize and predict scalable power and efficiency in such systems. For more information please contact Dr. Hangjian Ling, MNE Seminar Coordinator (hling1@umassd.edu). All are welcome. Students taking MNE-500 are REQUIRED to attend! All other MNE and EAS students are encouraged to attend.

  • Description: Topic: Data Optimization for Power In Large Arrays Of Sensors Location: Science & Engineering Building (SENG), Room 212 Abstract: The continuous demand for larger and more complex sensors constantly drives the need for smarter, faster, and more powerful silicon. To make these technologies more accessible to power sensitive applications, careful implementation of power management needs to occur. This is especially true of Two Dimensional Sensor Arrays (TDSA). Each pixel in a TDSA has several subcomponents all of which need to be designed to carefully optimize power. As the pixels increase in complexity and generate more and more data, the data management portions need to scale as well. This thesis documents the design iterations and analysis of the data management logic for a medium scale two dimensional array of sensors. The examined sensor has five 16-bit registers of data that needs to be moved from the sensor measurement logic to an IO port for external processing. Various architectures for both the data management blocks, as well as their sub components were designed in Verilog, synthesized to transistors and simulated for power measurements. The conducted experiments show that the Row Shift-Pass multiplexing architecture provides a significant reduction in power over a traditional Single Shift Chain. Digital designers can use this information to create more power efficient and higher performance sensors to meet the needs of an evolving world.
