Abstract:
Southeastern Massachusetts has over 1,500 lakes and ponds. The Clean Water Act requires that any of these systems that have impaired water quality should have a strategy to remove the impairments. Development of an appropriate strategy requires a reasonable understanding of how each system functions and which factors are the most important for addressing identified impairments. Most nutrient-related impairments in lakes and ponds are due to watershed/external inputs or sediment/internal inputs, but the relative balance between these sources can differ from pond to pond. In order to develop the necessary information for quantifying these sources, a diagnostic assessment is completed that gathers both internal and external data. The assessment becomes the foundation for a management plan that reviews applicable management options. Applicable options typically include various treatments for the sediments, watershed wastewater or stormwater treatment, and/or water column treatments, but the best solution will vary from pond to pond.

"From Alaska to Mexico: Understanding marine ecosystems from an integrated perspective"

Abstract
An ecosystem-based approach is presented for two projects in two different countries. The first one was developed in Sitka, Alaska, where socio-ecological conceptual models of relevant commercial and subsistence fisheries were constructed by collecting and synthesizing available scientific information, local ecological knowledge (LEK), and other qualitative information. These models, coproduced by scientists and Sitka stakeholders, illustrated the main biological and environmental factors driving the abundance of these fisheries. These models also elucidated how the interaction between Sitka residents and these fisheries affect community well-being. The second project is currently being developed in Mexico. It focuses on the atypical influxes of floating
sargassum seaweed that arrive to the Mexican Caribbean and coasts of Florida. This phenomenon has entailed severe impacts on coastal and marine ecosystems and their ecosystem services, as well as on the well-being of coastal communities. This project intends to develop a binational compendium of LEK to derive a list of best management and use practices of Sargassum. By doing so, a binational
cooperation will be enhanced by addressing a shared socio-environmental challenge.
