  • Description: Topic: Optical Modulator Design on III-V Semiconductor GaAs/AlGaAs Platforms Location: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (SENG), Room 213A Zoom Conference Link: https://umassd.zoom.us/j/92243568557 Meeting ID: 922 4356 8557 Passcode: 297183 Abstract: This work aims to demonstrate the viability and advantages of GaAs/AlGaAs optical modulator technology within current state of art. The ternary semiconductor AlGaAs offers a promising hybrid of critical modulator performance metrics including optical insertion loss, Vπ, size, high optical power handling, and compatibility with innovation and research processing in semiconductor technology in Massachusetts. Design techniques for GaAs/AlGaAs modulators will be presented, as well as tradeoffs, and optimization methods. Designs for platforms on several Al concentrations in the ternary III-V compound AlGaAs will be presented. Common bulk LiNbO3 modulators are large (typically 100mm), making them impractical for critically low SWaP use cases. LiNbO3 materials are also not compatible with existing semiconductor processing for III-V compounds. InP, on the other hand, is compatible with semiconductor optoelectronics and high-speed electronics manufacturing methods, and offers a small design, however it is not able to accept high optical power (typically only tens of mW), leaving it unviable in applications which use high optical power.
