  • Description: The Accounting and Finance Department announces the following research seminar. Speaker: Associate Professor. Cheng (Jason) Jiang (Temple University) Title: Lawyer CEOs and Corporate Innovation Date: Friday, November 19, 2021 Time: 10:00-11:15 AM Location: via Zoom Meeting https://umassd.zoom.us/j/4387551509?pwd=bVB2QzdtRmFCdkk1WTVQSUxHMS9iQT09 Meeting ID: Contact Prof. Xu Passcode: Contact Prof. Xu Abstract: We examine whether CEOs with law education backgrounds (i.e., lawyer CEOs) exert a different influence on firm innovation relative to other CEO types. CEOs with legal backgrounds arguably enforce better compliance with governance, social and law norms than CEOs from other backgrounds, leading to a more risk-averse approach to business activities and thereby impeding corporate innovation. Consistent with this argument, we find that firms with lawyer CEOs are associated with worse innovation outcomes, measured by patents and citations. This finding is robust to alternative identification strategies, such as instrumental variable approach, coarsened exact matching, and falsification test. Using a cross-sectional analysis, we further find that the negative association between lawyer CEOs and corporate innovation is more pronounced when firm's litigation risk is higher. We also document the mechanism that lawyer CEOs spend less on R&D and capital expenditures and are more likely to underinvest than non-lawyer CEOs. A rich set of robustness tests are conducted to confirm the findings. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to document empirical evidence for the long-standing concern expressed by early studies (e.g., Hayes and Abernathy 1980) that hiring CEOs with legal backgrounds decreases firms' commitment to innovation. • Mechanical Engineering (MNE) Seminar by Dr. Christopher Hansen
  • Location: Charlton College of Business, Room 115, , 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA
  • Contact: Mechanical Engineering Department
  • Description: Mechanical Engineering (MNE) SEMINAR DATE: November 19th, 2021 TIME: 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. LOCATION: Charlton College of Business, Room 115 (CCB-115) SPEAKER: Dr. Christopher Hansen, Chair, Associate Professor Mechanical Engineering, University of Massachusetts Lowell TOPIC: Additive Manufacturing of Multiple Materials, Metamaterials, & Lattices ABSTRACT: Additive manufacturing (i.e., 3D printing) promises customization of geometry and material, with the potential for cost savings and supply chain flexibility. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is an established technique but is limited in its ability to print multi-material designs. A multi-material printhead design will be described, which is demonstrated for dynamic coextrusion of thermoplastic materials. This dynamic co-extrusion of annular cross-sections is shown for thermoplastics that otherwise would be incompatible, enabling concepts such as a living hinge or shape retention during annealing processes. Digital light processing (DLP) is a high-resolution approach that could enable next generation metamaterials designs; however processing limitations of high volume fraction materials prevent its full potential. Novel particulate formulations with 50% volume percent filler combine low density with high modulus to more than double acoustic metamaterial performance. Finally, lattice-based structures for energy absorbing applications will be described. The flexible geometries of 3D printed structures allow modification of specific struts to control elastic buckling deformations and reduce the fluctuations in transmitted forces during compression. By optimizing the strut elements, equivalent energy absorption is achieved with minimal stress fluctuations, with potential application for helmet design. BIO: Christopher Hansen is an Associate Professor and Department Chair of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He received a B.S. in Materials Engineering from Iowa State University (2005) and a Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2011). His primary topics of research are additive manufacturing, fiber-reinforced composites manufacturing, toxics use reduction, and engineering education. He is Site Director of the SHAP3D Center, a National Science Foundation I/UCRC (Industry-University Cooperative Research Center), the sole NSF I/UCRC dedicated to the topic of 3D printing research. He is also Co-Director for Safer Materials at the Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI), a state-administered institute dedicated to the elimination of the use of toxics in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In his role at TURI, he provides strategic guidance and management with regards to its $1.5M annual budget and 12+ full-time professional staff. In 2014, he received the NASA Early Career Faculty (ECF) funding award, a prestigious grant given to rising young researchers in space-relevant STEM fields. For more information please contact Dr. Hangjian Ling, MNE Seminar Coordinator (hling1@umassd.edu). All are welcome. Students taking MNE-500 are REQUIRED to attend! All other MNE BS and MS students are encouraged to attend. EAS students are also encouraged to attend.
