  • Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Fisheries Oceanography Seminar Announcement "Potential Impacts of Offshore Wind Facilities on Regional Sea Scallop Larval Dispersal and Settlement over New England Shelf" Dr. Changsheng Chen Montgomery Charter Chair Professor SMAST at UMass Dartmouth Wednesday, September 8, 2021 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm SMAST East, Rooms 101/102 Also Via Zoom Abstract Funded by the Scallop RSA program, we have developed a wind turbine-resolving (up to ~1 m) coupled physical and scallop-IBM model for Sothern New England Shelf (SNE), with a computational domain covering the regions of the shelf off MA, RI, Block Island Sound, and Long-Island Sound. Using this model system, we have examined the impact of the offshore wind turbine generators (WTGs) deployment in the Vineyard Wind’s lease area of OCS-A-0501 on the dispersal and settlement of scallop larvae in the region. The results show that local WTGs in a small area can produce small-scale eddies and thus enhance turbulent mixing within and around the turbine area. The circulation change around the WTGs areas tends to increase the offshore water transport, resulting in upwelling from the Great South Channel (GSC) to Nantucket Shoals. The comparison between the cases with and without WTGs suggests that the wind farm development in the region could considerably change the larval abundance in SNE. The ongoing or proposed new WTG deployments in other lease areas of the Mass and RI Waters will expand the turbine-covering area. What will the cumulative impact of these wind farms on scallop larval dispersal look like? Both satellite-derived SST and models show that the northeast U.S. shelf experienced climate change-induced warming. The extreme warming at the shelf break off George Bank (GB) has intensified the cross-isobath water temperature gradient and enhanced the clockwise subtidal gyre over GB. This change has increased the larval retention rate over GB/GSC, facilitating enhanced productivity in the GB/GSC and SNE region. What degree could the future wind farm development influence the change of regional physical and habitat environments under changing climate conditions? Nights (second Thursday of every month) The University Art Gallery in New Bedford is proud to present Black & White, an exhibition by a beloved UMass Dartmouth professor, the late Marc St. Pierre (June 23, 1952 - December 2, 2019), featuring a selection of mixed media drawings and collage with encaustic, as well as black and white photography. Drawings created between 2008 and 2012, layered geometric elements, and abstract forms create a rich and poignant experience filled with wonder and exploration. They took inspiration from the 'man-made', architectural plans, diagrams, and maps of early explorers. In his artist statement from 2012, Marc said,“As the drawing process evolves, organic shapes and gestural lines are introduced over the groundwork in transparent overlays. This provides a counterpoint to the precision associated with the geometry and acts as a multiple exposure in photography. This pictorial space becomes a dialog of random marks that combines the constructed with the unsystematic. My drawings intend to move the eye within an abstract and shallow picture plane in a gradual release of time. The illusion of a 'deep space' in Marc's work, invites visitors into a complex, hazy, and multi-dimensional world of collage and encaustics that are presented in smaller formats in the exhibition. Describing his process in 2017, Marc wrote, "First, I use a variety of printmaking processes as a departure for recording marks, surfaces, and layers. This becomes a collage groundwork that allows me to invent the abstract equivalent of land patterns such as the meeting point of landmasses and water, for example. Secondly, additional layers of tracings from actual maps and topographic patterns are introduced. These drawings become a physical overlay suspended in translucent wax." Curiosity and the connection between the creative and scientific, as well as an equally strong interest in observing the tangible are also very much a part of Marc's pinhole camera work shown at Crapo Gallery. After his retirement in 2017, Marc was often seen counting the time of his exposures while photographing various New Bedford locations. According to Gallery Director, Viera Levitt, "Marc would talk about taking his pinhole photographs, leaving for these expeditions from the Star Store Campus with a repurposed box readied with a small hole for capturing images directly on the photo paper. He enjoyed telling stories to his impromptu audiences including the building guard, about the random passers-by, observing his 'mysterious box' on the ground, ready to 'shoot'! It was indeed magic to see the one-of-a-kind monotypes he was able to capture with such simple, but skilled technique and his great patience for experimentation." The exhibition is open through September 9 during the gallery hours Mon-Fri 9 am-6 pm and until 9 pm during AHA! Nights (the second Thursday of every month). The special reception is planned for Thursday, AHA! Night, August 12, from 6 to 8 pm. While macroplastic is the most conspicuous and iconic debris in the environment, micro (< 5 mm) and nano-sized (<50 µm) plastic particles are now recognized as a growing concern. Broadening interest in the topic has extended to plastic debris in rivers and other freshwater environments. Plastics are almost instantaneously colonized upon contact with water of any kind by a thin film of microorganisms, what we refer to as the "Plastisphere", particularly plastics in the smaller size ranges. My research team has been studying microbial interactions with PMD using a multiphasic approach including high-throughput amplicon and metagenomics sequencing, culturing, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and most recently Combinatorial Labelling and Spectral Imaging – Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (CLASI-FISH). These techniques all lend themselves to time-series sampling of developing biofilms on "virgin" substrates that can be sampled at desired time-points thereafter. Our early investigations revealed that Plastisphere communities are quite distinct from the surrounding environment, but time series investigations provide a time-stamp on the succession and community assembly in Plastisphere communities that is difficult if not impossible to achieve in naturally collected samples.
