  • Creating Collaborations in Teaching and Research
  • Location: Claire T. Carney Library, Office of Faculty Development
  • Contact: Office of Faculty Development
  • Description: Creating Collaborations in Teaching and Research Wednesday, October 19, 2022 1:00-2:30pm, Library 213 Facilitators: Gabo Camnitzer, College of Visual & Performing Arts Katie Krafft, Crime & Justice Studies Partly a reflection on the possibilities that arise when we creatively consider what it means to be together in person again (with an emphasis on together) and partly participant-driven activity, this workshop will be a space for locating (perhaps unexpected) places where our work intersects and laying the groundwork for potential collaborations in both teaching and research. As an introduction to the workshop, Gabo Camnitzer (CVPA) and Katie Krafft (CJS) will describe the development of an interdisciplinary collaboration between Camnitzer's Social Practice course and Krafft's Introduction to Urban Studies course, in which their classes came together for two weeks in Spring 2022 to create interactive group projects that drew on their respective courses, topics and methodologies. Following this introduction, the workshop will transform into a lightly-facilitated activity that will allow participants to creatively locate areas of overlap and explore possibilities for the development of collaborative teaching and research within and across disciplines and even colleges. We'll collectively imagine the ways that these collaborations can create dynamic experiences for both us and our students, energizing our classrooms, practices, and ideas. To register, please email Ellen Mandly at emandly@umassd.edu. We encourage you to join our programs in person, especially if you are already on campus. If you are not, know that our programming will remain accessible through the continued offering of virtual participation. Please indicate modality preference when registering. Lunch will be provided for all in-person participants. Questions should be directed to Katie Krafft ekrafft@umassd.edu.

  • Description: School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Fisheries Oceanography Seminar Announcement "Physical Processes Shaping the Northeast U.S. Shelf Ecosystem" Paula Fratantoni NOAA Fisheries Northeast Fisheries Science Center Oceans and Climate Branch Wednesday October 19, 2022 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm SMAST East 101/102 and via Zoom Abstract: The Northeast U.S. Shelf, extending from the Gulf of Maine to Cape Hatteras, is one of the most oceanographically dynamic marine ecosystems in the world, supporting fisheries associated with high gross revenues and employment. Its proximity to the western boundary currents of the subpolar and subtropical gyres and position relative to the atmospheric storm track in the North Atlantic establishes a complex interplay between ocean and atmosphere within the region. The combination of remote and local forcing and complex coastal bathymetry drives variability that complicates attempts to predict the physical state within the region, posing a significant challenge for the management of marine resources. Here we provide an overview of the oceanography of the Northeast U.S. Shelf, including the key physical processes that shape distinct habitats within the region. In addition, we highlight dramatic changes observed in recent years that could have implications for the ecosystem. ************************************************************************** Zoom Link: https://umassd.zoom.us/j/93758230260?pwd=OHJ5UDloQkZZaCtXcTlBNlR6Qm0rQT09 Meeting ID: 937 5823 0260 Passcode: 426839 ************************************************************************** For additional information, please contact Sue Silva at s1silva@umassd.edu
