  • Description: MA in Research Psychology Master's Defense by Karla Godfrey-Braga Date & time: Tuesday, November 30,2021, 12:00 PM Location: ROOM 374, LARTS, College of Arts & Sciences and via Zoom Title: The Impact of Social Structure on Language Structure Abstract: The present research advances our understanding of the role of social structure in shaping the ways that language changes over time. We focus on two theories regarding the forces that shape language change: the universal benefit hypothesis, where languages become easier so everyone can comprehend; and the insider benefit hypothesis, where languages change in ways that benefit only members of the specific members of the language community, becoming more difficult for outsiders to comprehend. Study 1 (N= 48) investigated social structure's influence on language structure. Results did not cleanly align with either hypothesis, but this pattern may have been due to the limited time of existence for the two systems. Study 2 (N= 48) investigated an outsider's comprehension on different types of semiotic systems. Results were consistent with the insider benefit hypothesis which states that language was created to benefit insiders and evolved for easy usability. Study 3 (N= 51) investigated an insider's and outsider's comprehensibility of improvised and established semiotic systems at different length of existence. Results were again consistent with the insider benefit. • Description: Columnist Susan Pawlak Seaman will speak at 4 pm in the Grand Reading Room hosted by the Claire T. Carney Library Associates. The event is open to the public. Refreshments will be served! After forty-five years of editing and writing for the new Bedford Standard-Times, Susan Pawlak Seaman posted her final column "Live and Learn" on May 3, 2020. Her own story began at Apponequet HS where she posted articles about learning through a student's eyes. Eagerly working in the paper's Middleboro bureau, Susan fell in love with journalism there, charting a new course as an English Major at Stonehill College, graduating 1974. She earned journalistic kudos for her steady, sensitive reportage in Middleboro through the seventies. After a tour of duty for the Standard-Times in Fairhaven, she at last emerged as an editor/columnist, married to the multitalented Standard-Times photographer Hank Seaman in October of '78. Their life together, along with extraordinary personal stories about life in the city of Melville and Douglass became a precious narrative for readers of the Standard-Times, and for WCVB-TV, The Brockton Enterprise, Taunton Daily Gazette, Fall River Herald News , and the FireRescue1.com digital network.

  • Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Fisheries Oceanography Seminar Announcement "Change is here: Modifying long term resource surveys due to offshore wind development on the eastern seaboard, U.S." Kathryn Ford, PhD NOAA Fisheries Population and Ecosystems Monitoring and Analysis Division Chief Wednesday, November 17, 2021 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm SMAST East, Rooms 101/102 Also Via Zoom Abstract: The development of offshore wind in U.S. federal waters has accelerated recently as governmental decision-makers have set increasingly aggressive renewable energy and decarbonization targets that have led to state power purchase agreements for offshore wind energy. Now there are 25 projects in various stages of permitting, and the financial close of the first commercial offshore wind project occurred in the fall of 2021. Current estimates are for the occupation of 2.5 million acres on the eastern seaboard over the next 10 years and expansion beyond that soon thereafter. One of the challenges posed by these developments is the impacts of offshore wind development on the scientific surveys used to assess health of fish stocks and monitor protected species managed by NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). Some of these surveys rely on survey designs, methods, and sampling platforms that are incompatible with wind energy infrastructure. Large wind arrays in which stations cannot be sampled will fundamentally disrupt these long term surveys and increases in scientific uncertainty will lead to impacts on fishing communities, protected species, marine industries, and the public. NMFS has described the needed actions to mitigate these impacts and has begun to partner with BOEM, wind farm developers, and the fishing industry on some initial actions to avoid the permanent loss of these important scientific enterprises. We will describe how individual surveys could be affected, the impacts to management advice, and describe current efforts to address the problem. ******************************************************************************** Zoom Link https://umassd.zoom.us/j/93758230260?pwd=OHJ5UDloQkZZaCtXcTlBNlR6Qm0rQT09 Meeting ID: 937 5823 0260 Passcode: 426839 One tap mobile +13017158592,,93758230260#,,,,*426839# US (Washington DC) +13126266799,,93758230260#,,,,*426839# US (Chicago) Dial by your location +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 646 876 9923 US (New York) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) Find your local number: https://umassd.zoom.us/u/acosTPRs4V ******************************************************************************** For additional information, please contact Sue Silva at s1silva@umassd.edu

  • Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences Seminar Announcement "Melting Sea Ice, Accelerated Shipping, and Arctic Invasions" Whitman Miller Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Edgewater, MD Wednesday, November 17, 2021 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm SMAST East Rooms 101/102 And Via Zoom Abstract Ships have plied Earth’s oceans for centuries, but maritime trade has been less intensive and expansive in polar regions than most other parts of the world. Extensive sea ice has precluded widespread access and transit by vessels for most of human history. However, under global climate change, sea ice is melting and Arctic waters are becoming more open and navigable. As sea ice recedes, the Arctic is experiencing expanded commercial navigation and exploitation of its natural resources, (e.g., petroleum/ mineral extractions, arctic fisheries.) Arctic shipping is increasing through both the Northwest Passage and the Northeast Passage (aka, the Northern Sea Route), increasing the likelihood of marine invasions and of biotic transfers between oceans in ballast water or on the submerged hull surfaces of ships. This lecture will review changes to Arctic conditions, shipping, and development, summarize some recent invasions of the Arctic, and discuss modeling approaches and experimental work on inter-ocean corridors that may shed light on how invasive species management may be pursued. ******************************************************************************** Join Zoom Meeting https://umassd.zoom.us/j/97440069270?pwd=L2Z1bDZESTFCKzJYZWduYVhWenYvZz09 Meeting ID: 974 4006 9270 Passcode: 428029 One tap mobile +13017158592,,97440069270#,,,,*428029# US (Washington DC) +13126266799,,97440069270#,,,,*428029# US (Chicago) Dial by your location +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 646 876 9923 US (New York) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) Meeting ID: 974 4006 9270 Passcode: 428029 Find your local number: https://umassd.zoom.us/u/adtxYu9NMO Join by SIP 97440069270@zoomcrc.com Join by H.323 162.255.37.11 (US West) 162.255.36.11 (US East) 115.114.131.7 (India Mumbai) 115.114.115.7 (India Hyderabad) 213.19.144.110 (Amsterdam Netherlands) 213.244.140.110 (Germany) 103.122.166.55 (Australia Sydney) 103.122.167.55 (Australia Melbourne) 149.137.40.110 (Singapore) 64.211.144.160 (Brazil) 149.137.68.253 (Mexico) 69.174.57.160 (Canada Toronto) 65.39.152.160 (Canada Vancouver) 207.226.132.110 (Japan Tokyo) 149.137.24.110 (Japan Osaka) Meeting ID: 974 4006 9270 Passcode: 428029 ******************************************************************************** For additional information, please contact Sue Silva at s1silva@umassd.edu

  • Description: Office of Faculty Development: Claire T. Carney Library Room 213 Presenter: Dr. Crystal Lubinsky, College of Arts and Sciences Can we give 4th-9thc CE Christian saints of Eastern Christendom a renewed, contemporary relevance by recasting them as modern non-binary heroes for use by Christians who identify as LBGTQ+? This is especially important because LBGTQ+ Christians are often disenfranchised or excluded by some churches and socio-spiritual circles. The answer is yes, for hagiography reveals God historically guided and protected devout Christian women who rejected sexual and gender expectations; therefore, as God is believed to be perpetually active in the world, then God must be offering the same support and protection to those breaking from gender boundaries and sexual expectations today. This workshop/dialogue is open to all faculty and will be conducted in "hybrid" modality. To register and receive the zoom link, please email Ellen Mandly at emandly@umassd.edu.

  • Mechanical Engineering (MNE) Seminar by Dr. Christopher Hansen
  • Location: Charlton College of Business, Room 115, , 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA
  • Contact: Mechanical Engineering Department
  • Description: Mechanical Engineering (MNE) SEMINAR DATE: November 19th, 2021 TIME: 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. LOCATION: Charlton College of Business, Room 115 (CCB-115) SPEAKER: Dr. Christopher Hansen, Chair, Associate Professor Mechanical Engineering, University of Massachusetts Lowell TOPIC: Additive Manufacturing of Multiple Materials, Metamaterials, & Lattices ABSTRACT: Additive manufacturing (i.e., 3D printing) promises customization of geometry and material, with the potential for cost savings and supply chain flexibility. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is an established technique but is limited in its ability to print multi-material designs. A multi-material printhead design will be described, which is demonstrated for dynamic coextrusion of thermoplastic materials. This dynamic co-extrusion of annular cross-sections is shown for thermoplastics that otherwise would be incompatible, enabling concepts such as a living hinge or shape retention during annealing processes. Digital light processing (DLP) is a high-resolution approach that could enable next generation metamaterials designs; however processing limitations of high volume fraction materials prevent its full potential. Novel particulate formulations with 50% volume percent filler combine low density with high modulus to more than double acoustic metamaterial performance. Finally, lattice-based structures for energy absorbing applications will be described. The flexible geometries of 3D printed structures allow modification of specific struts to control elastic buckling deformations and reduce the fluctuations in transmitted forces during compression. By optimizing the strut elements, equivalent energy absorption is achieved with minimal stress fluctuations, with potential application for helmet design. BIO: Christopher Hansen is an Associate Professor and Department Chair of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He received a B.S. in Materials Engineering from Iowa State University (2005) and a Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2011). His primary topics of research are additive manufacturing, fiber-reinforced composites manufacturing, toxics use reduction, and engineering education. He is Site Director of the SHAP3D Center, a National Science Foundation I/UCRC (Industry-University Cooperative Research Center), the sole NSF I/UCRC dedicated to the topic of 3D printing research. He is also Co-Director for Safer Materials at the Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI), a state-administered institute dedicated to the elimination of the use of toxics in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In his role at TURI, he provides strategic guidance and management with regards to its $1.5M annual budget and 12+ full-time professional staff. In 2014, he received the NASA Early Career Faculty (ECF) funding award, a prestigious grant given to rising young researchers in space-relevant STEM fields. For more information please contact Dr. Hangjian Ling, MNE Seminar Coordinator (hling1@umassd.edu). All are welcome. Students taking MNE-500 are REQUIRED to attend! • Description: The Accounting and Finance Department announces the following research seminar. Speaker: Associate Professor. Cheng (Jason) Jiang (Temple University) Title: Lawyer CEOs and Corporate Innovation Date: Friday, November 19, 2021 Time: 10:00-11:15 AM Location: via Zoom Meeting https://umassd.zoom.us/j/4387551509?pwd=bVB2QzdtRmFCdkk1WTVQSUxHMS9iQT09 Meeting ID: Contact Prof. Xu Passcode: Contact Prof. Xu Abstract: We examine whether CEOs with law education backgrounds (i.e., lawyer CEOs) exert a different influence on firm innovation relative to other CEO types. CEOs with legal backgrounds arguably enforce better compliance with governance, social and law norms than CEOs from other backgrounds, leading to a more risk-averse approach to business activities and thereby impeding corporate innovation. Consistent with this argument, we find that firms with lawyer CEOs are associated with worse innovation outcomes, measured by patents and citations. This finding is robust to alternative identification strategies, such as instrumental variable approach, coarsened exact matching, and falsification test. Using a cross-sectional analysis, we further find that the negative association between lawyer CEOs and corporate innovation is more pronounced when firm's litigation risk is higher. We also document the mechanism that lawyer CEOs spend less on R&D and capital expenditures and are more likely to underinvest than non-lawyer CEOs. A rich set of robustness tests are conducted to confirm the findings. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to document empirical evidence for the long-standing concern expressed by early studies (e.g., Hayes and Abernathy 1980) that hiring CEOs with legal backgrounds decreases firms' commitment to innovation. For additional information, please contact Prof. Hongkang Xu at hxu5@umassd.edu.
