  • Description: University Art Gallery, UMass Dartmouth, New Bedford presents Annu Palakunnathu Matthew: An Indian from India Curated by Viera Levitt Exhibition Dates: Nov 13, 2014 - Jan 25, 2015 Reception: AHA! Night, Thursday Nov 13, 6-9 pm, Artist Talk 7 pm Photo Booth: AHA! Night, Thursday December 11, 6-8 pm The University Art Gallery is pleased to present a solo show by Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, American artist born in England and raised in India. The exhibition will take place at UMass Dartmouth's New Bedford campus between November 13 and January 25, 2015 . Annu Palakunnathu Matthew's work explores and challenges our perception of identity, photography and memory. She enlivens old black and white, or sepia toned photos through a surprising and skillful technique of digital manipulation that preserves the background while adding figures of herself or others. With this body of work, Ms. Matthew challenges our perceptions of time and collective memory, while also asking us to look with new eyes at the much cherished family photograph, especially those that were perhaps brought to this country by our immigrant grandparents. Additionally, by replacing static images with animations that are displayed on iPads and inserted into an old book or picture frames, Matthew adds surprise, an inverted dimension of time and contemporary interpretation into a traditional form of media. As part of our commitment to community engagement, we will have a photo booth taking professional photographs of any three generations of woman from the same immigrant family during AHA! Night on Thursday , December 11 from 6 to 8 pm . Through these portraits, the artist wants to create work that both depict the changing face of American immigration and also chronicles the continual renewal of American diversity. The visitors can bring the whole family and get a print to take home. Learn more at tinyurl.com/immigrantphoto . Reception: AHA! Night, Thursday Nov 13 , 6-9 pm, Artist Talk 7 pm Photo Booth: AHA! • Description: TOPIC: IMPLEMENTATION OF UEFI SECURE FIRMWARE UPDATE WITHOUT UEFI SECURE BOOT LOCATION: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & engineering Building (Group II), Room 213A ABSTRACT: The Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) is an interface for the communication between a computer firmware and the operating system, specifically the operating system loader. Operating system (OS) is a software package to manage computer resources and provide user service. The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) as well as the essential part of OS, such as the OS loader that boots OS when the computer is powered on, is stored in persistent memory or Read-Only Memory (ROM). The combination of the memory hardware and the code/data software is called firmware. The specification is published by the UEFI forum to document a set of tables and service calls made available to the OS and loader. UEFI contains Secure Boot, which allows only authenticated images to be loaded and executed from within the BIOS. This would include PCIe option ROMs, PCIe drivers, and OSs. PCIe stands for Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Express, a standard for high-speed communications among computer components. By limiting what can be loaded and launched at boot time, we can assure that no malicious software is compromising the system during boot. UEFI BIOS is stored in flash memory and is accessed via the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). During boot time, if this interface is unlocked, any driver, option ROM, or OS can write to the flash and corrupt the system. UEFI Secure Boot is designed to prevent this security vulnerability, since only trusted non-malicious code will be run. However, we run into an issue when we have to allow un-authenticated firmware to run without having Secure Boot enabled (such as a legacy operating system). The purpose of this project is to implement a way to conduct a secure firmware update without the use of UEFI Secure Boot. It is reasonable to assume that certain functions can be guaranteed for execution at certain times. These functions include detecting the BIOS update, authenticating the image, flashing the image, and locking the SPI flash. Throughout the process, it is also necessary to log the steps in the process so that the OS can see the results of the complete process. All of these steps must be completed before any third party code is executed, or we risk compromising the system. The project overviews the secure firmware update process, as well as details the timing requirements at each step. The project also overviews enhancements made to the initial release and future expandability options. The project exemplifies the assurance of security without losing operability, the technology with significant economic impact to the computing industry. • Description: TOPIC: QUALITY MODELING OF COMPRESSED IMAGES AND ITS APPLICATIONS IN WIRELESS NETWORKS LOCATION: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (Group II), Room 213A ABSTRACT: This project intends to create No-Reference (NR) quality estimations for JPEG compressed images. Tuning a NR estimation model towards PSNR may not be suitable in summarizing NR quality measurements. This project investigated a computational and memory proficient NR quality evaluation model for JPEG compressed images; and examined subjective test outcomes to refine the model. A short survey on existing models are presented at the beginning. An experimental approach was applied to improve identified weaknesses for one of compared models. The second part of the project provides a sophisticated and verified model by considering a group of images. Besides, the project studies the quality performance estimation for image transmissions over wireless networks, and establishes the relationship between the bit error rate and (Peak signal-to-noise ratio) PSNR. The project concludes that the model for NR image quality is feasible in wireless network applications. NOTE: All ECE Graduate Students are ENCOURAGED to attend. • Mechanical Engineering Seminar by Dr. Ankit Srivastava
  • Location: Textiles Building 101E
  • Contact: Mechanical Engineering Department
  • Description: The Mechanical Engineering Department is pleased to announce the following SEMINAR on Wednesday, 1/14/15 from 1:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Textile Building, Room 101E. SPEAKER is Dr. Ankit Srivastava of Brown University. TOPIC is Correlating Ductile Fracture Surface Roughness and Fracture Toughness. ABSTRACT is: Two fundamental questions in the mechanics and physics of fracture are: (i) What is the relation between observable features of a material's microstructure and its resistance to crack growth? (ii) What is the relation between observable features of a material's microstructure and the roughness of the fracture surface? An obvious corollary question is: What is the relation, if any, between a material's crack growth resistance and the roughness of the corresponding fracture surface? My presentation will be focused on the results of finite element calculations of mode-I ductile crack growth aimed at addressing these questions. At room temperature, ductile fracture of structural metals generally occurs by the nucleation, growth and coalescence of micron scale voids. In the calculations, an elastic-viscoplastic constitutive relation for a progressively cavitating plastic solid is used to model the material. In a variety of structural alloys, the distribution of void nucleating particles can be idealized as involving two size scales; larger inclusions that nucleate voids at relatively small strains and smaller particles that nucleate voids at much larger strains. In the calculations the larger inclusions (e. g. MnS inclusions in steels) are discretely modeled to introduce a length scale, while the smaller particles (e.g. carbides in steels) are taken to be homogeneously distributed. The crack growth resistance is quantified in terms of JIC and the tearing modulus, TR. The Hurst exponent of the correlation function of the fracture surface height distribution, a quantity typically used to characterize the fracture surface roughness, is also calculated. In addition, the fracture surface roughness is investigate using the full statistics of the fracture surface height distribution. Possible connections between quantitative measures of crack growth resistance and quantitative measures of fracture surface roughness are explored and related to the nature of the ductile crack growth process. ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Ankit Srivastava is currently working as Postdoctoral Fellow at Brown University He is currently working on Micromechanics of plastic deformation and phase transformation in multiphase steel. He received his doctoral degree in Materials Science and Engineering from University of North Texas. His doctoral research addressed on Mechanics and Mechanisms of Creep and Ductile Fracture. His research interests are focused on micromechanical modeling of deformation and fracture of materials with spatial and temporal heterogeneities using tools of solid mechanics. For more information please contact Dr. Vijay Chalivendra (vchalivendra@umassd.edu, 508-910-6572). All are welcome. Mechanical Engineering students are encouraged to attend.
