  • Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Fisheries Oceanography Seminar Announcement "Ecosystem and Socioeconomic Profiles in the Northeast US" Abby Tyrell, PhD Science Analyst, Contractor with Ocean Associates in support of Ecosystem Dynamics and Assessment Branch Northeast Fisheries Science Center Wednesday, February 2, 2021 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm SMAST East, Rooms 101/102 Also Via Zoom Abstract: Sustainable, successful fisheries management must take changing ecosystem conditions and human behaviors into account. Subsequently, the inclusion of ecosystem and socioeconomic data in fisheries management has increasingly been sought by scientists, stakeholders, and policymakers. We are developing a standardized framework to facilitate the inclusion of ecosystem and socioeconomic information in the stock advice process – termed Ecosystem and Socioeconomic Profiles (ESPs). Our process leverages existing information to understand the environmental, ecological, and socio-economic drivers of stock dynamics. This process begins with (1) a systematic review of existing ecosystem and socioeconomic literature for the stock, followed by (2) development of conceptual models to outline the major pressures on the stock, (3) creation of indicators relevant to stock performance, (4) analysis of select indicators, and, lastly, (5) reporting out scientific advice. The scientific advice provided by the ESPs can come at multiple levels of complexity, ranging from providing additional context to inform model uncertainty, to suggesting new covariates to evaluate in assessment models. In this seminar, I will outline how this preliminary ESP approach is being piloted for the bluefish stock in the 2022 research track assessment. Finally, I will highlight the ways that open data science and automation can facilitate the implementation of ESPs. ******************************************************************************** Zoom Link https://umassd.zoom.us/j/93758230260?pwd=OHJ5UDloQkZZaCtXcTlBNlR6Qm0rQT09 Meeting ID: 937 5823 0260 Passcode: 426839 One tap mobile +13017158592,,93758230260#,,,,*426839# US (Washington DC) +13126266799,,93758230260#,,,,*426839# US (Chicago) Dial by your location +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 646 876 9923 US (New York) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) Find your local number: https://umassd.zoom.us/u/acosTPRs4V ******************************************************************************** For additional information, please contact Sue Silva at s1silva@umassd.edu

  • OFD Workshop: Introduction to Contemplative Pedagogy
  • Location: Claire T. Carney Library, Room 213
  • Contact: > See Description for contact information
  • Description: Wednesday, February 2, 2022 12:00 -1:15 pm, LIB 213 Facilitator: Justine Dunlap, UMass Law This workshop will demystify contemplative pedagogy. What do we mean by "contemplative pedagogy"? What is it, what is it not, and why it is appropriate in a public university? This workshop will focus on contemplative pedagogy as simply a way to "develop concentration, deepen understanding and insight and cultivate awareness and compassion" (Deborah Haynes, quoted in Parker and Zajonc, The Heart of Higher Education: A Call to Renewal). This introduction to contemplative pedagogy will also identify specific ways to encourage and support all faculty who are interested in this topic. The OFD continues to offer programming in hybrid modality for Spring 2022. Please register for the workshop by emailing Ellen Mandly at emandly@umassd.edu and please declare your modality preference (virtual or in-person) when registering. Lunch will be available for all in-person participants, and can be taken "to go" at the end of the session. In compliance with UMass Dartmouth policies, masks or face coverings must be worn in the Office of Faculty Development.

  • Description: Two of a Kind: Abelardo Morell and Anthony Fisher Exhibition Dates: February 2 - March 10, 2022 OPENING RECEPTION: AHA! Night, Thursday February 10, 6-8 pm | Artist Talk: 6:30 pm CLOSING RECEPTION: AHA! Night, Thursday, March 10, 6-8 pm Reserve your free ticket for the opening and closing: umassdartmouthgalleries.eventbrite.com Facebook + Instagram @ UMassDartmouthGalleries For additional information, please go to: umassd.edu/cvpa/galleries Contact: Viera Levitt, Gallery Director and Exhibition Curator The UMass Dartmouth University Art Gallery at Star Store Campus, Downtown New Bedford has the pleasure to invite you to the exhibition titled, Two of a Kind, featuring large scale photographs of paint by Abelardo Morell in conversation with paintings by Anthony Fisher. This exhibition presents two creative approaches that focus on the abstract image- Abelardo Morell's incredibly lush and sensual photographs of fresh paint frozen in time with the help of light, fast exposure and flash, and Anthony Fisher's ingeniously captured lines and shapes featured on layered, monochromatic abstract paintings. Both Morell and Fisher share a restless urgency to invent novel ways to play with traditional media, subjects, and methods. In their respective studios in the same creative community just outside of Boston, each pours their unique experimentation into their own patient and carefully crafted process. Results sometimes arrive as wonderful surprises transformed into bold work that the visitor can almost enter - inspiring, open minded, and deeply creative. Abelardo Morell admires Anthony's work because he, "like me, thinks a lot about how a picture is made. Subject matter for him is, of course, important, but it is within his working process that the subject emerges. Anthony has used all sorts of devices to make marks on the canvas - perhaps to get his ego out of the way a bit." Anthony Fisher's studio process involves quirky and lumbering invented tools, physical struggle, gravity, chemistry, and physics to allow hundreds of marks to be thrown onto a canvas all at once. "My process is specifically designed for EXCESS- with so many visual ideas emerging at once, the overwhelmingly vast majority are discarded. I want the unexpected. My goal is to spark ideas that otherwise wouldn't appear with a more deliberative, considered approach," says Fisher. Abelardo Morell explains his admiration for the subject matter of his photographs, "When I visit museums, my eyes often take me first to the painting galleries. I marvel at the surfaces of paintings, which contain their own visual dramas, often independent of any narrative or formal aspect of the work. A difference between us as a photographer and painter is that photographers normally start with the world, while painters begin with a blank canvas and end up at times with astonishing creations." Morell's photographs show "that substance on its way to drying- a stage that finished paintings can never retain. "I also use other lighting sources pointed at a low angle to increase the raking light effects on the thick paint surface. I like the translucent and geometric visual marriages achieved through this method. Because what I am making are not "paintings" in their own right, I am able to quote and crop discrete small paint details to make them play a big role in the final picture." Created specifically for this exhibition and presented at the gallery's entrance is another visual surprise that underlines the connection between these two artists, neighbors and friends- a photograph of Abelardo Morell titled, "Paint: After Anthony Fisher's 2021 Painting 'Some Will Still Be Standing', 2022" right next to the actual painting that inspired this work. Free tickets are available for the opening and closing reception during AHA! Night, Thursday February 10, 6-8 pm (Artist Talk starts at 6:30 pm) and AHA! Night, Thursday, March 10, 6-8 pm at umassdartmouthgalleries.eventbrite.com. The exhibition is open free of charge between February 2 - March 10, 2022. No reservation required to visit the gallery daily from 9 am to 6 pm.

  • Contact: > See Description for contact information
  • Description: Thursday, February 3rd, 2022 12:30pm - 1:45pm Library 213 Presenter: Dr. Crystal Lubinsky, College of Arts and Sciences Can we give 4th-9thc CE Christian saints of Eastern Christendom a renewed, contemporary relevance by recasting them as modern non-binary heroes for use by Christians who identify as LBGTQ+? This is especially important because LBGTQ+ Christians are often disenfranchised or excluded by some churches and socio-spiritual circles. The answer is yes, for hagiography reveals God historically guided and protected devout Christian women who rejected sexual and gender expectations; therefore, as God is believed to be perpetually active in the world, then God must be offering the same support and protection to those breaking from gender boundaries and sexual expectations today.
