  • The Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences Weekly Seminar Announcement - Juan Gutierrez Bravo
  • Location: > See description for location
  • Contact: > See Description for contact information
  • Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences Seminar Announcement “Distribution of larval fish in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific Oxygen Minimum Zone” Juan Gutierrez Bravo Graduate Student SMAST at UMassD Wednesday, April 12, 2023 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm SMAST East, Rooms 101/102 And via Zoom Abstract: The three-dimensional distribution of fish larvae and juveniles, in relation to environmental structure and dissolved oxygen gradients, was analyzed from eight key locations in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ). The oxic layer depth (>100 umol kg-1) was <50 m in the Costa Rica Dome, ~80 m in the warm pool off Guatemala and Mexico, and ~120 m in two anticyclonic eddies crossed during sampling. The upper-lower boundaries of the OMZ anoxic core (<2 umol kg-1) expanded from 350-500 m off Costa Rica to 100-750 m off central Mexico, displacing the hypoxic layer (10-100 umol kg-1). Larval fish stages were distinctly distributed. Preflexion and flexion stages were restricted to the oxic layer. Postflexion and transformation stages were abundant in the oxic layer but also present in deeper layers, including the anoxic core. Juveniles of meso-bathypelagic species were present along the water column but most abundant below the anoxic core, showing a physiological capacity to cross anoxic waters. Dominant species distribution shows that epipelagic species are restricted to the oxic layer through their development, while meso-bathypelagic species like Diogenichthys laternatus and Cyclothone spp. cross the core to deep hypoxic waters as transformation larvae and juveniles. Thus, expanding OMZs could further restrict the habitat of epipelagic species, while also affecting the displacement of meso-bathypelagic species. We suggest that changes from hypoxic to anoxic conditions could greatly affect the life cycles of keystone species in the world’s OMZs. ******************************************************************************** Join Zoom Meeting https://umassd.zoom.us/j/97440069270?pwd=L2Z1bDZESTFCKzJYZWduYVhWenYvZz09 Meeting ID: 974 4006 9270 Passcode: 428029 One tap mobile +13017158592,,97440069270#,,,,*428029# US (Washington DC) +13126266799,,97440069270#,,,,*428029# US (Chicago) Dial by your location +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 646 876 9923 US (New York) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) Meeting ID: 974 4006 9270 Passcode: 428029 Find your local number: https://umassd.zoom.us/u/adtxYu9NMO Join by SIP 97440069270@zoomcrc.com Join by H.323 162.255.37.11 (US West) 162.255.36.11 (US East) 115.114.131.7 (India Mumbai) 115.114.115.7 (India Hyderabad) 213.19.144.110 (Amsterdam Netherlands) 213.244.140.110 (Germany) 103.122.166.55 (Australia Sydney) 103.122.167.55 (Australia Melbourne) 149.137.40.110 (Singapore) 64.211.144.160 (Brazil) 149.137.68.253 (Mexico) 69.174.57.160 (Canada Toronto) 65.39.152.160 (Canada Vancouver) 207.226.132.110 (Japan Tokyo) 149.137.24.110 (Japan Osaka) Meeting ID: 974 4006 9270 Passcode: 428029 ******************************************************************************** For additional information, please contact Sydney Carreiro at scarreiro1@umassd.edu

  • Department of Fisheries Oceanography Weekly Seminar Announcement - Jeff Kennedy
  • Location: > See description for location
  • Contact: > See Description for contact information
  • Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Fisheries Oceanography Seminar Announcement “Utilizing a Model to Assist in Establishing a Closed Safety Zone adjacent to a Wastewater Treatment Plant for Public Health Protection in compliance with the National Shellfish Sanitation Program” Jeff Kennedy Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries Wednesday, April 12, 2023 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm SMAST East 101-102 And via Zoom Abstract: The National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP) was established to ensure the sanitary harvest, handling, and processing of bivalve molluscan shellfish in the US. The sanitary classification of shellfish growing waters is the primary focus of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries Shellfish Program. A critical aspect of the NSSP is the sanitary classification of waters adjacent to wastewater treatment plants. These closed safety zones classified as Prohibited to shellfishing are required around major point-source outfalls. Typically, those zones have been set using simple dilution calculations, or when available, hydrographic dye studies have been employed. The utilization of a model to establish closed safety zone limits promises to protect public health with more extensive geographic coverage, using a wider range of environmental data while expediting the process coast wide. Bio: Jeff Kennedy has been the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) Shellfish Sanitation, Management and Technical Assistance Program Manager since 2020 and previously the North Shore Shellfish Regional Supervisor and Shellfish Purification Plant Manager. He is currently the DMF voting delegate at the Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference, having served on numerous committees since 2005, including Biotoxin, Depuration, Growing Area Classification, Male Specific Coliphage, Overboard Discharge, Shellfish Restoration, Shellfish Cleansing Studies, and Wet Storage - chairing several, and is a current Task Force member at the conference. **************************************************************************** Zoom Link https://umassd.zoom.us/j/93758230260?pwd=OHJ5UDloQkZZaCtXcTlBNlR6Qm0rQT09https://umassd.zoom.us/u/acosTPRs4V Meeting ID: 937 5823 0260 Passcode: 426839 One tap mobile +13017158592,,93758230260#,,,,*426839# US (Washington DC) +13126266799,,93758230260#,,,,*426839# US (Chicago) Dial by your location +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 646 876 9923 US (New York) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) Find your local number: ***************************************************************************** For additional information, please contact Sue Silva at s1silva@umassd.edu
